Project update
June 2024
Between July and October 2021, we consulted on improvements to the intersections at East Tāmaki, Preston and Ormiston roads. Following consultation feedback, the proposal will proceed as planned.
We have engaged Fulton Hogan to carry out the construction work, which will be done in 2 stages. Stage 1 is expected to begin in June 2024.
- Stage 1 involves relocating underground utility services like power, gas and fibre broadband lines over the 3 intersections, including across the roads.
- Stage 2 involves the construction of the safety improvements and road changes discussed during consultation.
We have made minor changes to the pedestrian crossing type. Since these roads are important freight and arterial corridors, we will install unraised pedestrian crossings. Once the work is complete, we’ll monitor vehicle speeds on these roads to check whether the improvements meet the project’s safety objectives.
Construction
Stage 1
Stage 1 works consist of the following:
- digging service trench lines for the relocation of power, gas and fibre broadband lines over the 3 intersections, including across the roads
- installing new utility connections in various locations
- construction of permanent and temporary footpaths at various locations to provide pedestrian access for Stage 1 and 2 works
- removal of approximately 24 non-native trees at the northeastern landscaped corner of Preston Road and Ormiston Road
- changes to the retaining wall at 283 East Tāmaki Road and upgrading the footpath at the corner.
What you need to know
- Stage 1 is expected to begin in June and will take approximately 3 months to complete, depending on the weather.
- Work will be done in stages, and multiple roads may be worked on at the same time.
- Daytime work hours are from 7am to 6pm, and nighttime work hours are from 7pm to 5am. If nighttime work is needed on your road, you will be notified.
- We will use a mix of temporary traffic signs (like Stop/Go signs), traffic lights and a lower speed limit. We do this to keep traffic moving.
- Some temporary parking restrictions will apply: Cones and “no parking” signs will be used to limit parking where needed.
- On-street parking will be limited while we carry out the work. You may need to park on your property or on a side road then walk to your property.
- You will be mailed a letter notifying you of roadworks on your road prior to construction.
- Help keep our construction crew safe by slowing down around work sites, following signage and being ready to stop.
Project overview
Intersections at East Tāmaki and Preston roads and Preston and Ormiston roads are causing traffic delays, making it difficult for pedestrians and cyclists to access the road. Given the population growth in East Tāmaki and surrounding areas, this situation is likely to worsen over time. To enhance the safety and efficiency of the existing road space for all users, we proposed several improvements along sections of East Tāmaki, Preston and Ormiston roads.
Between July and October 2021, we sought public feedback on our proposed improvements, to better understand the needs of all road users in the area. We sent information to people living and working near these intersections, and people who use these roads regularly.
