If you’re new to riding or haven’t been on a bike for a while, this relaxed, practical session is a great confidence booster.

Bring your own bike or borrow one of ours.

Bookings are required for all ‘Adults learn to ride’ courses, as space is limited.

Includes:

  • a basic bike introduction and safety check
  • checking and fitting a helmet
  • balancing and pedalling independently
  • starting without help, braking, gears
  • bike handling skills, look backs and signalling.

These are run on an on-demand basis for individuals or groups (small or large).

Register your interest and we will be in touch when we have enough participants to run your course.

Adults learn to ride (on the road)

From shared paths to roads

Hours: 3

Cost: free

Age: 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and able to ride a bike)

‘Adults learn to ride (on the road)is designed to get you confident when cycling on quiet and busier roads, under the guidance of an experienced instructor.

This course is suitable for those who are already confident riding a bike on shared paths and are wanting to continue developing these skills to be able to ride safe on-road routes.

Bring your own bike or borrow one of ours.  

Depending on the group level, you may cover:  

  • understanding road signs and rules
  • positioning on shared paths and roads
  • passing side roads and parked cars 
  • what to do at traffic lights, intersections and roundabouts 
  • turning right in traffic  
  • riding in on-road cycle lanes 
  • route planning.

E-bike experience

Introduction to e-bikes and a guided ride 

Hours: 3

Cost: free

Age: 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and able to ride a bike)

Are you comfortable on a bike but curious about going electric? This session will introduce you to different e-bikes in a safe court space, then take you out on a trial guided ride on shared paths.  

This course is appropriate for adults who know how to ride a push bike but are interested in trying an e-bike and would like some advice on how to ride them safely.

Bring your own bike or borrow one of ours. 

Includes:

  • helmet fitting
  • checking your confidence on a regular bike
  • e-bike introduction:
    • understanding the controls, motor and battery
    • assist levels and gears
    • different e-bike styles
    • storage and security
  • e-bike handling skills:
    • starting and stopping, including getting on and off
    • manoeuvring
    • using gears and different levels
    • a guided ride on local cycle paths.

Bike maintenance 101

Take the mystery out of caring for your bike

Hours: 2

Cost: free

Age: 14+ (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult and able to ride a bike)

This fun, hands-on workshop takes the mystery out of caring for your bike. This course is suitable for those with no previous bike maintenance experience. It’s best to bring your own bike to work on, but you can also just watch the instructors work on a demonstration bike. Wear clothes that you do not mind getting a bit greasy.

Also suitable for e-bikes.

Learn how to:

  • name the parts of your bike
  • do a bike maintenance check 
  • adjust the saddle and handlebars 
  • fix a puncture 
  • remove and fit a wheel  
  • clean and grease a chain 
  • change the dreaded flat tyre.

Need to know

  • Bookings are required for all ‘Adults learn to ride’ courses, as space is limited.
  • Registrations close 48 hours before each session.
  • For all on-demand courses, you must register your interest. On-demand courses include ‘Adults learn to ride (on the road)’, ‘E-bike experience’ and ‘Bike maintenance’. 
  • The venue address and further details will be supplied once you have registered.
  • Bring your own bike and helmet if you can, so they can be safety-checked and you can get familiar with your own gear.
  • Bikes and helmets are available if you request one in advance.  

Group bookings

If a group is interested in gaining bike skills, we can schedule one of our courses for you at a time and date to suit you, for free through the on-demand portal.

We can also tailor the course material to match the skill level of the group’s participants.

Your group must have at least 10 participants (or 6 for the ‘Adults learn to ride (on the road)’ course).

If your group has less than 10 participants, register through the on-demand portal with the details of all your participants.  

Requirements

  • We require at least 3 weeks’ notice to confirm contractor availability. 
  • For ‘Adults learn to ride,’ ‘E-bike experience’ and ‘Bike maintenance’, we require a minimum of 10 participants and a maximum of 30. 
  • For ‘Adults learn to ride (on the road)’, we require a minimum of 6 participants and a maximum of 18. 
  • Bookings are subject to contractor availability.
