How can I protect my business against ram raids?
There are a number of methods you can use to protect against ram raids, and each has benefits and drawbacks. It's important to consider your specific context to determine the best option for you, your budget, and the constraints of your site. Where possible, we recommend using multiple methods in combination to maximise protection.
Security cameras
Security cameras can be an affordable psychological deterrent against ram raids and other types of break ins. They can also provide you with useful information if your business is broken into. They are best used in combination with other protective measures.
Fog cannons
Fog cannons fill the room with dense security fog to block an intruder's vision and slow them down. They won't physically stop a break in, but can help to reduce losses and buy time for police to arrive.
Roller doors
Roller doors can be put down at night as an additional physical layer of security that can reduce the impact velocity of vehicles attempting ram raids as well as making other types of break ins more difficult. To install a roller door, it's likely that you will need to apply for a Building Consent with Auckland Council.
Street furniture like planter boxes or benches
Well-placed planter boxes or benches can act as both a physical and psychological deterrent for ram raids, while also being an asset to the area. They may be easier and cheaper to install than bollards but tend to take up more space so may not be appropriate if the footpath is narrow. You will need to apply with Auckland Transport for permission to install street furniture on public footpaths. To do this, please email us at bollards@at.govt.nz with your enquiry and we can guide you from there.
Bollards
Bollards are short posts that can be placed on roads or footpaths to prevent vehicle access or mark boundaries. They can be effective physical or psychological deterrents against ram raids depending on the context and the design of the bollards. To install bollards on the footpath, you will need to complete a Bollard Installation Application with Auckland Transport.
Ram raid beams
Ram raid beams are fixed steel beams that can be installed across the front of a business. They are primarily a visual deterrent.
Building reinforcement
Floor to ceiling glass storefronts are particularly vulnerable to ram raids. Because of this, one of the best ways to protect your business is to reinforce the building itself. While more costly than other options, this is also the longest-term solution.
How can Auckland Transport help me?
Most of the ram raid protection methods mentioned above are things you can put in place if you own the property or have approval from the property owner. However, if you decide that bollards or street furniture are the right option for you, and you want to place them on the public footpath, you will need to submit a Bollard Installation Application with Auckland Transport. This is so we can help you make sure they are installed safely and correctly.
