How to top up an AT HOP card Te ara hei uta moni ki tō kāri AT HOP
Before you can travel, you must add money to your AT HOP card. You can do this online or in person, or you can load a monthly or day pass.
In most cases, your top-up will be available to use in 1 hour for travel by bus, train, and ferry. If you need to travel immediately, we recommend you top up in person.

To activate your top-up, you’ll need to tag on at an AT HOP reader or electronic gate within 60 days. Until then, it will show as pending in your account.
If you do not tag on within 60 days, the transaction will expire and the payment will be returned to your credit or debit card.
Other ways to top up
You can top up your card in person at an AT HOP retailer, selected vending machines, or a customer service centre.
If you’re a frequent traveller, you can load a monthly pass on your card to get unlimited travel on included services.
HOP card balance expiry
Your AT HOP card, and any value loaded on it, will expire if it is not used, no refund is requested, the card is cancelled, or no HOP money or monthly pass value is loaded onto it for a continuous period of 6 years.
If this happens, you can contact us to transfer your balance and/or the value of any deactivated products, such as monthly passes, to another HOP card.
If your HOP card expires and you don’t take action, any remaining value will be forfeited and become the property of Auckland Transport.
AT HOP card expiry
All HOP cards expire 10 years after they are bought. Once that happens, we will replace your HOP card for free.
