Project overview
Many deaths and serious injuries take place on Auckland’s roads, and according to our crash statistics, 80% of all deaths and serious injuries happen on 50km/h local urban roads.
Nearly half of those deaths and injuries involve vulnerable road users, such as children, the elderly, people cycling and walking. We are committed to reducing the numbers of deaths and serious injuries on our roads over the next 10 years.

Project details
Why we have identified Henderson
Henderson has a number of great cultural, recreational and educational facilities, and there is also demand for improved facilities and connection. Panuku (Auckland Council’s regeneration agency) are planning a number of improvements in Henderson, and later this year there will a consultation on new cycleways in the wider area. Over the next few years, there will be substantial investment into Henderson, with a number of new connections and improvements being implemented.
This project is supported by the Henderson-Massey Local Board.
Crash statistics
The current safety proposals have been made in response to a number of accidents over the past few years. Our crash data taken from 2013 – 2018 reports there have been a total of 26 crashes, including 5 serious crashes and 21 minor injuries.
Project update 2022
Henderson-Massey Local Board Capital Transport Funding was affected by the Auckland Council Emergency Budget as a response to the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, the funding to deliver this project was affected. In 2021, the Local Board was able to deliver the safety improvements to Edwards Avenue.
In 2022, the Local Board was able to secure the funding to deliver the next stage of the project. This includes:
- Norval Avenue
- Pinedale Avenue
- Longburn Road
- Kingdale Avenue
- Fairdene Avenue.
This work is planned for 2023.

Roads we asked for feedback on in 2020
Swanson Road, Universal Drive and Lincoln Road
Proposed changes include safety improvements to roads between Swanson Road, Universal Drive, and Lincoln Road. These include:
- new speed bumps to lower drivers speeds
- painting a section of the road red to encourage drivers to slow down
- new speed tables
- Upgrading pedestrian crossings to raised zebra crossings to a platform level with the footpath. This will improve road safety by slowing high traffic speeds near the crossings.

Larnoch Road and Mawney Road
Proposed changes include:
- new speed bump and new speed tables outside 8 and 32 Larnoch Road and 6 Mawney Road, to lower drivers speeds.
- installing new coloured road surfacing outside 4 Larnoch Road to encourage drivers to slow down.
- upgrading bus stop markings and signs and installing broken yellow lines either side of the bus stops outside 3, 6, and 38 Larnoch Road to improve visibility.

Edwards Avenue - Completed
Changes included:
- new speed bumps to lower driver speeds
- new raised zebra crossing outside Liston College back gate
- widening the footpath next to the zebra crossing and installing kerb ramps
- new broken yellow lines markings (no stopping at all times) to improve visibility
- new signs and road markings to make sure drivers navigate the crossing safely.
We delivered the Edwards Avenue safety improvements in 2021.

Fairdene Avenue
Proposed changes include:
- new speed bumps to lower driver speeds
- new raised pedestrian crossing at the back of Henderson Intermediate to improve crossing safety
- widening the footpath to make it easier to access the crossing point
- new broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) to improve visibility.
We'll deliver the safety improvements on Fairdene Avenue in 2023.

Pomaria Road
Proposed changes include:
- new speed bumps at 70, 56, 42 and 12A Pomaria Road
- upgrading the zebra crossing at 26 Pomaria Road, to include a speed table and traffic island
- widening the footpath next to the zebra crossing and install kerb ramps
- extending the kerb out on each side of the new speed bumps
- new signs and road makings to make sure drivers navigate the crossing safely.

We are proposing to create a safer travelling environment by installing new speed bumps on:
- Harrington Road
- Larissa Avenue
- Mildmay Road
- Norval Road
- Pinedale Place
- Kingdale Road
- Longburn Road.
