Transport Choices programme Transport Choices programme
As part of the Transport Choices package, and under the Climate Emergency Response Fund (CERF), Waka Kotahi planned to invest $350 million to provide for greater transport choice for people across Aotearoa New Zealand.
Update November 2023
Waka Kotahi has advised Auckland Transport that all future CERF construction commitments and funding approvals for the Transport Choices programme of work are paused until they receive clear direction from the incoming government on their transport investment priorities.
This means these projects are now on hold until further notice. Further information on the CERF-Transport Choices funding is expected in the coming months.
About the Transport Choices programme
Rapid lifestyle changes and Auckland's ongoing growth mean we need to better plan and help shape our cities.
It’s about making small, quick, and visible changes to our streets and the way people use them and helping people embrace cycling or walking as a means of travel. We're building a transport system that's sustainable for the next generation.
Transport is also a significant source of carbon emissions. Transport Choices will help reduce these emissions from transport and create fairer, safer, and healthier environments for people to live, work and play across the country. It’s just one initiative within the Waka Kotahi Climate Emergency Response Programme that will enable people across the country to directly fight climate change.
Auckland Transport’s programme of work
The funding Auckland Transport has received as part of the Transport Choices programme will help add scope to a number of proposed community projects. It will suppor initiatives such as safe schools' projects, walking and cycling initiatives, along with improvements to bus routes and priority to help make the switch to public transport more desirable.
Some of AT’s projects have already been fully consulted with communities, while some have been proposed by local boards. Other will be subject to further community discussions and local boards as they progress.
Some projects have changed or reduced in scope due to recent Government policy changes. Auckland Transport will now deliver the following:
