Auckland is divided into 14 fare zones. All travel is calculated based on how many zones you travel through, rather than how many trips you take.

Example journeys

Joe travels by bus and train from Otara to Greenlane.

Joe has travelled through 2 zones and will pay a 2-zone fare with his AT HOP card. Without integrated fares, Joe would pay a one-zone bus fare plus a 2-zone train fare.

Sally travels by bus, ferry and train from Devonport to Newmarket.

With her AT HOP card, Sally will pay just the Devonport ferry fare. (Buses and trains at the start or end of your ferry trip are included if they’re in the same zone.) Without integrated fares, Sally would pay a one-zone bus fare, the Devonport ferry fare and a one-zone train fare.

Warkworth, Hibiscus Coast, Upper North Shore and Lower North Shore in North Auckland
Helensville, Huapai and Waitakere in West Auckland
City, Isthmus and Waiheke in Central Auckland
Beachlands in East Auckland
Manukau North, Manukau South and Franklin in South Auckland.

Zone overlap areas at some zone boundaries allow you to travel to the edge of the zone border without crossing into another zone.

If you're travelling within a zone overlap area as part of a journey and paying with an AT HOP card (this means tagging on and off at bus and train stops within the same zone overlap area), this may count as travelling through a new zone. Check Journey Planner for the correct fare.
