Improving safety at other level crossings
Learn about safety improvements we're making to remaining level crossings before the City Rail Link opens to the public.
Project details
We are making interim safety improvements to some level crossings across Auckland to ready the rail network for the City Rail Link (CRL).
These improvements may include:
- automatic safety gates for pedestrians
- improved signage on the approach to the level crossing
- longer barrier arms to cover the full width of the road
- trimming of the trees to improve the visibility of the rail crossing.
Each level crossing is unique and may require different improvements to be installed. Some level crossings may already have these safety features installed.
Why we are making these improvements
We recognise that it is not possible to remove all level crossings across Auckland before the CRL opens to the public. This is because each level crossing is unique and requires extensive planning, community engagement and funding.
The interim safety improvements will ensure that remaining level crossings are made as safe as possible before we introduce more frequent trains.
We need to make these improvements to demonstrate to NZ Transport Agency that we have sufficiently reduced safety risks. We must comply with safety regulations associated with running more trains before we can introduce more frequent trains after the CRL opens.
Installing some interim safety improvements before the CRL opens is reasonably practicable and therefore required to receive approval from NZ Transport Agency to run more frequent trains.
