Fare changes from 1 May 2024
The government has decided to withdraw funding for child and youth concessions. This means that:
- children ages 5 to 12 can no longer travel for free on weekdays on AT bus, train and ferry services
- passengers ages 13 to 24 are no longer eligible for half-price HOP fares.
Weekend travel is still free for children ages 5 to 15 who tag on and off with an AT HOP card registered with their correct date of birth. (Offer applies to scheduled AT bus, train, and ferry services and AT Local. Excludes Waiheke and Rakino ferries.)
Discounts available
We offer discounts for children, secondary and tertiary students, and those who hold a Community Services, Total Mobility or Blind Low Vision NZ card.
If you don’t qualify for a concession, you can still save 10% when you travel during off-peak hours:
- before 6am
- between 9am to 3pm
- after 6:30pm until end of service on weekdays
- all day on weekends and public holidays.
If you travel on multiple services, each tag-on must be during one of these periods for the off-peak discount to apply.
Children under 5
Children under 5 years old do not need their own AT HOP card and can continue to travel for free on AT bus, train and ferry services when accompanied by a paying passenger.
No action is required.
Children 5 to 12
Free weekday travel for children ages 5 to 12 is no longer available. This age group now pays child HOP fares (at least 40% off adult fares) on weekdays but can travel for free on weekends.
To ensure sufficient funds for weekday travel, parents should top up their child’s AT HOP card.
