From Sunday 10 December 2017, new bus route 739 will replace the existing 589 and run hourly, 7 days a week. This includes a new route, new bus stops, a new timetable, and new buses.

Benefits of the new 739 bus route
You can look forward to more frequent bus services which now also operate on Sundays.
The 739 has a simpler route which connects Beachlands and Maraetai to the new Countdown in the Pohutukawa Coast Shopping Centre and to Pak’nSave in Ormiston.
Buses will run on a more regular timetable, departing every hour, on the hour from Maraetai and Botany.
This change is part of an exciting transformation of the public transport network across Auckland and comes into effect at the same time as the New Network for East Auckland.

Public engagement
The Beachlands Maraetai bus and ferry survey was open from 19 October to 2 November 2015.
We received 541 responses (298 hard copy feedback forms and 243 online surveys). We took this feedback on board for the new 739 bus service.

Ferry feeder bus service
One of the key topics investigated in the survey was the viability of trialling a ferry feeder bus service.
AT is taking these steps towards a potential future ferry feeder bus service:
- Investigate possible route options to provide a ferry feeder service.
- Work out the kilometres and costs for the routes.
- Work out infrastructure requirements, including investigating bus stops and bus turnaround options at Pine Harbour.
- Seek
funding for future services and infrastructure through AT’s budget processes.
We will also undertake more investigation about the planned development for the area, as this will influence the planning of any new bus routes. New roads can potentially provide better route options, and housing development can help determine the potential usage of a service.
The bigger picture
Over the next few years, we are introducing a new bus network for Auckland’s metropolitan suburbs. As a result, until the New Network is completed (estimated for the second half of 2018) there is limited budget available for the infrastructure changes required to provide a ferry feeder service in Beachlands and Maraetai, and to investigate alternative route options.
However, even though funding for new services may not be submitted until after the New Network’s completion, we are including the new 739 bus service with the east New Network implementation in December 2017. This responds to some of the key interests of the Beachlands and Maraetai community that were reflected in the public transport survey.
