Proposal update

We advised you in May 2022 that the construction target for this project is between July and December 2022.

Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we needed to push back the construction date.

Next steps

This project is now scheduled between January 2024 and April 2024. However, if there is any change to the programme, we will update this webpage accordingly.

Proposal outcome

In May 2021, we proposed pedestrian safety improvements on Summerland Drive and Semillon Avenue, in Henderson. This proposal responded to requests from the community and Local Board to improve the safety of people crossing the road, particularly school children, near Summerland Primary School in Henderson. After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work as proposed.

These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed in the 2022/2023 financial year. We will be in touch with local residents and business prior to any construction taking place.

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.

  • Concern that the raised pedestrian crossing on Semillon Ave is unnecessary. 
    The proposal to place a raised pedestrian crossing on Semillon Avenue is in response to community requests for improved pedestrian safety measures within this area, particularly for the many students who use this crossing. These improvements to pedestrian safety will contribute to Auckland Transport’s Vision Zero goals and benefit all pedestrians, not only those who attend Summerland Primary School.
  • Request to move the raised pedestrian crossing closer to the Summerland Drive - Semillon Avenue junction to improve pedestrian safety. Request to install an additional pedestrian crossing and/or speed bump on Harvest Drive
    The proposed location for the raised crossing on Summerland Drive has been determined as the most appropriate location. The location allows a vehicle exiting the street to wait clear of the pedestrian crossing (as per the Road Code) and allows pedestrians to cross without waiting for a vehicle to complete that movement. The requested alternative location and/or additional speed calming measures would involve significantly more changes to the existing street layout which would impose additional technical, cost and time difficulties.
  • Request to tighten corner radius on Semillon Avenue to reduce vehicle speeds.
    The proposed raised table was designed with reducing speeds in mind and will help to reduce vehicle speeds. Changing the corner radius potentially makes access for waste collection vehicles more difficult, as well as representing a more expensive improvement scheme, therefore this is not something we will be including within this project.
  • Recommendation to extend the kerbside no parking zone on Semillon Avenue to assist vehicle visibility and improve pedestrian safety.
    While we appreciate the concerns regarding parked vehicles obstructing visibility, AT has assessed that the existing parking restrictions are sufficient to maximise pedestrian visibility at this formal crossing. Raising the crossing will also reduce vehicle approach speeds and increase reaction times for road users. Parking is a valuable resource in residential areas and its removal can be inconvenient for residents. The proposed changes are a balance between important safety measures and noting the community need for parking.

We're proposing improvements in your area

We have received requests from residents and the Local Board to improve the safety of people crossing the road, particularly school children, near Summerland Primary School in Henderson. We are asking for your feedback on proposed pedestrian safety improvements on Summerland Drive and Semillon Avenue. 

We are proposing to:

  • Replace the existing school crossing on Summerland Drive, north of the intersection with Semillon Avenue, with a raised zebra crossing. This will involve upgrading the pedestrian island in the middle of the crossing and fitting tactile pavers on each side, which are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Install a raised zebra crossing on Semillon Avenue, near the intersection with Summerland Drive. This will involve installing new footpaths to join the edge of the crossing with the footpath, fitting tactile pavers, and reinstating the grass berm around the new footpath.
  • Installing new signage, school patrolled crossing poles and road markings to reflect these changes.

These changes would improve the safety of all road users, especially school children walking to and from school. The raised pedestrian crossings would help to slow vehicle speeds around Summerland Primary School and where children are crossing the road. The raised crossings would also improve the visibility of pedestrians crossing the road for drivers approaching the crossings.
