We’re installing a new zebra crossing and other safety improvements on Fruitvale Road to make it safer and easier for people walking in the area.
The work will be split into two stages and is weather dependent. We’ll be closing off the road for 24 hours, from Monday to Sunday in a one-way direction from Tuesday 25 October to Friday 11 November 2022.
Detours will be in place so please follow the directions of traffic management teams and they’ll also help to manage vehicle access. On-street parking will be limited while we carry out the work.
Thanks for your patience and cooperation while this is completed. Please plan ahead and allow for some delays to your journey during this time.

Proposal update
In April 2021, we invited community feedback on our proposal to improve pedestrian access and safety in Fruitvale Road, New Lynn. We then proposed additional improvements at the intersection of Arawa Street and Fruitvale Road in September 2021 to further improve safety.
Next steps
The project is going ahead, but there are delays to the construction timeframe of this project.
This project now has a construction target of November 2022.
Contractors will issue 48-hour notices to all affected residents prior to start of construction works.
Changes to the design
During the detailed design stage of this project, it has been identified that improvements are also required at the intersection of Arawa Street and Fruitvale Road. Alongside the originally proposed changes, we are also now planning to:
- Reconstruct the existing kerb ramp crossing at the intersection of Arawa Street and Fruitvale Road. This will include fitting tactile pavers on the footpath on either side of Arawa Road, which are yellow guidance paving markers that help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
- Upgrade the traffic islands on Arawa Street.
- Widen the berm on the northern corner of Arawa Street and Fruitvale Road intersection.
- Relocate signage to support these changes.

Proposal outcome
In April 2021, we proposed changes to improve pedestrian access and safety in Fruitvale Road, New Lynn. After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work as proposed. These works will help support our Vision Zero goal.
Community feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.
- Concern that there is a high parking demand in the area and the street is often full of parked cars which narrow the road and cause congestion.
Restrictions to remove parked cars from both sides of Fruitvale Road is likely to cause an increase in traffic speeds along this straight stretch of road, and therefore would decrease the safety of the road for all road users. As such, we will not be installing any parking restrictions as a part of this proposal. - Concern that people are blocking access to properties and causing damage to driveways by parking in or across driveways when dropping off and picking up train passengers. Suggestion to install a drop-off zone as part of the proposed changes. Parking across driveways is prohibited. We have lodged this complaint for investigation by our parking enforcement team. We would recommend regularly reporting these infringements to our parking enforcement call centre, which operates 24 hours, 7 days a week: 09 355 3553. Unfortunately, a drop off zone is outside the scope of this project. There are nearby spaces on Fruitvale Road and on Arawa Street without parking restrictions where cars can legally stop to drop off train patrons.
- Concern about having to wait for pedestrians to cross one by one at the crossing.
The crossing is not expected to cause congestion as waiting times will be minimal. - Concern changes will cause people to park on train tracks, observation this already occurs when people are crossing Fruitvale Road.
Parking on train tracks is not considered to be an issue as it is already illegal to park on the train tracks. - Suggestion for level crossing barriers to be down only when train is moving, not when waiting at platform.
Barrier arms are in place for the safety of all people near the level crossing. There are no plans to change the crossing barrier functioning at this time. - Concern about speedbumps in the surrounding area being unfit for vehicles.
This speed table will be constructed to a standard design which serves to improve safety for all road users.
We're proposing improvements in your area
The community have asked us to make some improvements to provide better pedestrian access and increase the safety of people crossing Fruitvale Road. These changes include installing a raised zebra crossing and new footpaths with tactile pavers.
The changes we are proposing:
- Removing the existing speed bump and installing a raised zebra crossing near 8 Fruitvale Road.
- Installing new footpaths to join the edge of the crossing with the footpath, fitted with tactile pavers, which are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
