Project Update

In March 2023, we updated the Glen Eden community about redesigning our proposed crossing to accommodate a new driveway which would impact the proposed pedestrian crossing location. The community feedback will also be reflected in the new design. However, our design parameters and processes have been updated, highlighted below:

Delivering more affordable and practical safety improvements

Aucklanders expect us to deliver safety improvements in the most cost effective and least disruptive way possible. To that end, we review all upcoming projects to ensure we are delivering affordable and practical solutions at as little cost to ratepayers as possible, including raised pedestrian crossings. We will not compromise safety. But we recognise a common-sense approach is needed and to ensure fit for purpose and affordable solutions. These must meet the needs of all those that walk and bike, as well as other road corridor users, and be supported by local boards, local communities, and road users.

Glendale raised zebra crossing update

The design for this crossing was revised last year to accommodate a potential new driveway at a nearby property. Since the changes were minor, there was no requirement to reconsult the community. At this stage, we note that this project is currently on hold because of the internal review of all upcoming projects, referred to above.

Proposal outcome

In April 2022, we proposed to install a raised zebra crossing outside 95 Glendale Road in Glen Eden. This proposal was created in response to the community feedback from a previous proposal for pedestrian safety improvements in the area.

After completing the consultation, we were advised by a property owner that they were considering a new driveway which would impact the proposed pedestrian crossing location. After several discussions, we have decided to change the design to accommodate the planned driveway and look into other improvements we can apply based on the community feedback.

What happens next

We will redesign the proposal within the next 2 months. If the changes are significant, we will go back and reconsult the community. Otherwise, we will publish the updated design on the website and inform the community by posting update letters.

Community feedback

Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. Here is the summary of the feedback we received from the community about this proposal and our responses to them:

Location of Crossing

  • Prefers the original proposal to have the raised zebra crossing outside 79 Glendale Road.
The community feedback from the previous consultation indicated that the demand for a pedestrian crossing was better suited closer to the Baptist Church and Vision West.
  • Suggestion to install a second pedestrian crossing outside 70 Glendale Road.
Based on the community feedback from the previous consultation, the demand for a pedestrian crossing was better suited closer to the church in Glendale Road.

Speed Calming

Miscellaneous

  • Suggestion to put cameras on new crossings to monitor the volume of people using them.
This area will still be monitored after the installation of this crossing. Based on investigation and feedback received from the previous consultation, the proposed location is often used by pedestrians to access local amenities and bus stops.
  • Requests to start the construction as soon as the feedback ends as safety is a big issue in the area.
After consultation was completed in April 2022, the project team were informed of a driveway relocation. We will adjust the design to accommodate the driveway. We want to progress this to construction as soon as the design conflict is resolved, along with budgetary and deliverability constraints.
  • Requests a roundabout at the Glendale and Glengarry Road intersection.
We have submitted a request for this issue on your behalf. Should you wish to follow up on the matter, kindly give us a call on 09 355 3553 using this reference number: CAS-699199-L8K4F7

We're proposing improvements in your area

In May 2021, we proposed to improve pedestrian safety by installing a raised zebra crossing outside of 79 Glendale Road, Glen Eden. We have listened to the community feedback that we received on the project, and we are now proposing to install the raised zebra crossing at a new location outside of no.95 Glendale Road.

We are proposing to:

  • Install a new raised zebra crossing on a Swedish-style raised table. The Swedish table will be flat and wide with a gradual slop at one end that will make it comfortable for vehicles to travel over at an appropriate speed. The crossing will have tactile pavers which are yellow guidance paving markers that help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Relocate the bus stops to outside 91 and 96 Glendale Road. The bus stops will be complete with a bus shelter.
  • Paint broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) on either side of the crossing and the bus stops to ensure sightlines are maintained and support safe bus operations. This will remove approximately 11 on-street parking spaces to improve visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.
  • Re-build the footpath and build out the kerb to facilitate safe pedestrian access to the new crossing.
  • Install new signage to ensure that drivers are aware of the upcoming raised crossing.
  • Install new streetlights to ensure that pedestrians are visible to drivers during low lit hours of the day.

In May 2021, the community informed us that they felt that the crossing would be more beneficial for pedestrians if it was installed between 91 and 97 Glendale Road. We listened to community feedback and re-investigated the pedestrian crossing demand at this location, and found that this was the most suitable location for the raised zebra crossing to be installed.

These changes are needed as there is a lack of safe crossing facilities along Glendale Road. The new raised zebra crossing will reduce high driver speeds near the crossing, and improve pedestrian safety for people walking in the area to access local amenities and the bus stops. We understand that removing parking can be inconvenient, so we have minimised the removal while ensuring good lines of sight at the crossing and safe bus operations.
