Weymouth Road and Palmers Road, Weymouth – Weymouth Schools Safety Improvements Weymouth Road and Palmers Road, Weymouth – Weymouth Schools Safety Improvements
Proposal status: Closed
Reference number: SSM2122-018
Proposal outcome
In September 2023, we proposed improving road crossing safety for pedestrians and cyclists at Weymouth Road, Palmers Road, and Estuary Road, Weymouth. After reviewing the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work as proposed. These works will help support Tāmaki Makaurau's Vision Zero goal.
This project is funded by the Auckland regional fuel tax and is part of the Safe Schools Programme.
What happens next
We anticipate the changes will be constructed in April 2024. We will be in touch with local residents and businesses before any construction takes place.
Community feedback
Thank you for helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood, informed by your local knowledge. A summary of your feedback and our responses to community questions is below.
Speed humps
Concern: A resident's house has been hit 3 times on different occasions with drink driving and road rage. Suggestion to install speed humps in place as you come to a school zone area.
For this project, we’ve prioritised installing raised zebra crossings directly outside or near schools. These are locations where we know that many tamariki are crossing or where no other pedestrian crossing facilities exist. Since 2019, we’ve taken an area-wide approach to reducing speeds in residential streets, rather than targeting single streets. We choose our priority areas based on the following:
- number of crashes
- safety risk
- traffic speed
- land use
- concerns from residents and elected representatives.
Visit our Residential Speed Management programme page to see priority areas and find information about how we made our decision.
Raised zebra crossing
Concern: Raised zebra crossings are suitable close to schools, but only in some places, and will slow emergency services down.
- Raised zebra crossings effectively slow down vehicles and ensure that children and adults have a safe place to cross the road.
- These proposals are all near schools, where many pedestrians, predominantly students, are crossing the road.
- We appreciate that vehicles must slow down while driving through the crossings. However, the impact on travel times is relatively low, considering the safety benefits they bring.
Speed limit
Concern: The speed limit is already too low on Weymouth Road – suggestion to return it to what it was previously.
The speed limit on Weymouth Road and the surrounding area was reviewed as part of Phase 3 of our Safe Speeds Programme. 30km/h was assessed as the area’s safest and most appropriate speed.
See NZTA's Speed management guide for more information about how we determine safe speed limits.

We’re proposing improvements in your area
Aucklanders have told us that moving around our city safely and easily is important to them. We are proposing some improvements to your area.
We are proposing improvements to make it safer for students at Waimahia Intermediate School and Te Matauranga School in Manurewa to get around.
We’re proposing to:
- Install new raised zebra crossings near Waimahia Intermediate School and Te Matauranga School.
- Install tactile pavers near the crossings. These are yellow guidance paving markers to help people find their way to crossings and safely across roads.
- Paint new road markings and install signage to support the changes.
Some parking will need to be removed near each crossing to make sure motorists and people waiting to cross the road can see each other. We understand that parking removal can be inconvenient, so it will be minimised to only what’s necessary to make the crossings safe to use.
We’re also proposing improvements to the bus stops to make them safer to use as part of this project. There’s more information about all the changes on the drawings included with this letter.

This project in Weymouth contributes to Tāmaki Makaurau’s Vision Zero goal as it would:
- Slow motorists to a safer speed.
- Raise pedestrians, especially children, crossing the road to be at eye-level of approaching motorists, making them easier to see from a distance.
- Improve visibility between motorists and people waiting to cross the road.
- Make it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.
Manurewa: Safe with us
Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Weymouth Road are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
