Proposal outcome

In 2021, a fatal crash occurred in the area. In June 2023, as part of the fatal crash recommendation, we proposed changes to improve road safety and visibility issues due to parked vehicles (mostly large trucks) along Takanini School Road.

After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the following minor changes to the proposal. The minor change is:

  • extending the parking restrictions next to the 70 & 80 Takanini School Road driveways to improve visibility exiting these properties.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed before 30 June 2024. We will contact residents and businesses before any construction takes place.

These works will help support Tāmaki Makaurau’s Vision Zero goal. This proposal is funded by the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax.

Concern about visibility issues in the area due to large trucks parked on the road

As per New Zealand road user rules, we acknowledge that parking is legally allowed, with no restrictions, up to one metre from a private entrance or driveway.

We are using a mix of 2m and 6m parking restrictions from driveways on Takanini School Road. This balance was achieved by removing some parking while retaining some parking. These restrictions will improve driver visibility. In addition, better-marked parking spaces will help drivers park correctly and safely.

We cannot justify removing all parking along this section of Takanini School Road. Extending the restrictions further or longer will reduce the available parking space and likely result in trucks using locations where parking would be inappropriate.

Concern that the current parking situation is another accident waiting to happen

The proposal is to formalise and control parking on Takanini School Road. We are doing this by:

  • removing some parking by driveways
  • installing new road markings that will better guide drivers along Takanini School Road and improve visibility when turning from Reding Street and Spartan Road onto Takinini School Road
  • creating better-marked parking spaces
  • adding a centre line and parking edge lanes to make the road appear narrow to drivers, which may encourage slower driver speeds along Takanini School Road
  • installing broken yellow lines.

Suggestion that heavy trucks not be allowed to park at any time of the day along Takanini Road School, especially in residential areas

Takanini School Road is in a semi-industrialised area. Large trucks mainly park on the street in the evening, when many adjacent properties are closed for business. Prohibiting large trucks from parking on Takanini School Road will likely lead to them parking on surrounding local residential roads, which is not recommended.

Request to paint broken yellow lines outside the Sikh temple - concern that the proposed broken yellow lines outside the Sikh temple will not be enough to deliver safety

Three on-road parking spaces will be removed beside the driveways of the Sikh temple. Removing parking, better-marked parking spaces and broken yellow lines will help improve driver visibility.

Request to extend broken yellow lines outside 50F Takanini School Road

The proposed restrictions to the north of driveway number 50F are to allow buses to access the bus stop more easily. Extending restrictions beyond number 50F is not considered appropriate at this time. However, we will continue to monitor the situation.

Suggestion to conduct a meeting with the local businesses and community to discuss the proposal

Discussions were held with a representative from the Sikh temple and the local councillor before consultation. A further meeting with the community is not considered necessary at this time.
