Proposal outcome

In March 2023, we proposed changes to improve pedestrian safety at 14 Clevedon Road, Papakura. We have decided not to proceed with the proposed changes at this time. We have a wider improvements project for Papakura Town Centre which is planned to start in the next year. We will relook at this location and incorporate it into the wider project. We are yet to design or consult on the town centre improvements project but will let you know when it is available.

We anticipate the changes will be constructed in the next financial year. We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

To improve safety for vulnerable road users like pedestrians and cyclists, we are proposing to upgrade the zebra crossing at 14 Clevedon Road, Papakura.

We are proposing to:

  • Upgrade the existing zebra crossing outside 14 Clevedon Road to a raised zebra crossing. The crossing will be raised to the height of the footpath and have long off ramps. This makes it more comfortable for people crossing the road and larger vehicles and their passengers.
  • Paint broken yellow lines near the crossing to prevent parked vehicles from blocking visibility between drivers and pedestrians. As a result of this, 4 parking spaces would be removed.
  • Install new traffic islands to break up the journey for pedestrians crossing the road.
  • Install orange flashing lights at the crossing so that drivers know they are approaching a zebra crossing.
  • Install yellow tactile pavers at the crossing points and in the middle of the crossing. These are guidance paving markers to help people find their way to crossings and safely across roads.

Clevedon Road is a busy road, and we’ve identified 3 crashes nearby in the last 5 years. Raising the zebra crossing will slow speeds, making it a safer road for everyone. It would also create a safe place for people to cross the road to get to Massey Park.

This project supports Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland’s commitment to Vision Zero, an ambitious transport safety vision with the goal of no deaths or serious injuries on our transport system by 2050.

Our approach acknowledges that as people, we all make mistakes. However, a mistake should not mean someone dies or is seriously injured on our roads. It’s also an approach that values everyone using the road, not just those in vehicles.

This project in Papakura contributes to Tāmaki Makaurau’s Vision Zero goal as it would:

  • slow motorists to a safer speed
  • raise pedestrians, especially children, crossing the road to be at eye-level of approaching motorists, making them easier to see from a distance
  • improve visibility between motorists and pedestrians crossing the road
  • provide a safe crossing location for pedestrians to access Massey Park Pool and local shops
  • make it more comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross the road as the crossing is level with the footpath.

We’ve ensured the design of the crossing could also accommodate any future cycling plans, but the focus of this proposal is to make Clevedon Road safer.

This proposal is funded by the regional fuel tax.
