Proposal outcome

In August 2022, we proposed changes to improve pedestrian safety at the Onehunga Mall and Princes Street roundabout as the location is highly used by pedestrians going to and from the Onehunga Train Station and there are many shops nearby.

Thank you to everyone who submitted feedback on this project, you are helping us make better decisions for your neighbourhood. We received a mix of feedback on this consultation. After carefully considering all the feedback we received, we have decided that we will not proceed with the changes at this time.

We have a wider improvements project for Onehunga Town Centre which is planned to start within the next few years which will include the Onehunga Mall and Princes Street intersection. We are yet to design or consult on the town centre improvements project. Your feedback will contribute to the proposed design, so we can create a better proposal for your neighbourhood. Throughout this consultation we also heard that the community is more concerned about the lack of crossing facilities and safety issues at the Onehunga Mall and Church Street roundabout. We were asked by the community, the Local Board, and the Onehunga Business Association, to investigate that intersection instead of the Onehunga Mall and Princes Street intersection. We agree that there is a lack of pedestrian facilities at the roundabout, and we’ve discussed this with Eke Panuku as they have ongoing projects in the area. They have agreed to include Onehunga Mall and Church Street pedestrian improvements in their wider scheme.

We’re proposing improvements in your area

Auckland Transport would like to work with you to deliver safer roads in your neighbourhood. This location is highly used by pedestrians as Onehunga Train Station and many retail shops are nearby. The proposed changes aim to enhance pedestrian safety and accessibility to the train station and nearby shops while maintaining the efficient operation of the intersection.

We are proposing to: 

  • Install a raised zebra crossing on each approach to the Onehunga Mall and Princes Street roundabout. Place a pedestrian island at the centre of each crossing to provide a safe space for pedestrians to wait before making the second stage of the crossing.
  • Upgrade the existing pedestrian islands on the Princes Street east approach.
  • Widen the footpath at each crossing point. This would result in the removal of 2 parking spaces on the Princes Street west approach.
  • Install tactile pavers at the crossing points. Tactile pavers are yellow guidance paving markers to help visually impaired people to find their way to the crossing and safely cross the road.
  • Install new signs and road markings to support the new crossings.
  • Relocate the mobility parking spaces on Princes Street.
  • Paint a small section of broken yellow lines (no stopping at all times) on the Princes Street east approach to improve visibility going into the roundabout. This would result in the removal of 2 parking spaces.

The raised crossings would slow drivers to a safer speed as they enter the roundabout and make people crossing the road more visible. The raised crossing would be level to the footpath, so it is comfortable for everyone, including people with prams and wheelchairs, to cross.
