Cook Street, City Centre – Gateway treatments Cook Street, City Centre – Gateway treatments

Proposal status: Feedback closed 6 December 2020. Last updated 26 February 2021.

Proposal update

We carried out consultation with key stakeholders and directly affected residents on 25 November until 6 December 2020.

We asked them that as part of the Safe Speeds Programme, we have implemented new speed limits in key areas throughout the Auckland Region on 30th June 2020. The aim of introducing the new speed limits is to make Auckland streets safe for all, in particular, the growing number of people walking and cycling.

The new 30km/h City Centre speed limit zone requires some changes made to the road environment. There are 23 gateway locations which provide points of entry into the new lower speed environment as well as mark the entrances into the City Centre. The Gateway designs will need to create entry points into the city that provide clear cues to motorists to slow down; fostering a sense of safety for all road users and indicating the new slow speed environment.

Gateway designs

The gateway treatments will generally consist of new speed limit signs and banner on two sides of the road, and coloured/textured surfacing. In addition, some sites will have kerb build-out and landscaping.

The changes we are proposing:

  • The current signage will be shifted slightly and new road markings will be installed including a red gateway surface treatment across the full length of the road.

Community feedback

We received feedback from two people. Their requests are summarised below, followed by our response.

  • Request for a street sign denoting the cycleway entrance to Cook Street from Sales Street and Union Street.
This project is focused on speed management and ensuring that drivers exiting the motorway system are able to safely slow to 30k and are encouraged to comply with the new speed limits. Unfortunately, the cycleway is outside of the scope of this project, however we are happy to see if the proposed additional signage could be incorporated into this project.
  • Large scale changes to the area: making Sam Wrigley Street two way, installing a roundabout at the intersection of Cook Street and Sam Wrightley Street and traffic lights at the intersection of Sam Wrightley Street and Union Street, and realignment of the Cook Street offramp.
These suggestions were well received by our design team but unfortunately AT just don’t have the budget to make such large changes at the moment.
  • Mention that vehicles are travelling the wrong direction on Sale Street and Cook Street.
We have taken on board that there is a lack of "WRONG WAY" signage on these two side roads and have looked at what additional signage we could install to further reduce the likelihood of someone accidentally travelling the wrong way down these streets.

Next steps

Auckland Transport have taken on board your feedback and made changes to the design to include additional signage where needed.

We will now engage a suitably qualified contractor to make the changes necessary to enhance this gateway into the Auckland CBD. We expect this work to be completed in the first half of 2021.

City Centre: Safe with us

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Cook Street are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
