About Connected Communities
The Connected Communities Programme has identified 13 key arterial road corridors across Auckland which are to be transformed to accommodate growth and provide better transport choices. Auckland is growing fast and as the population continues to increase, journey times along busy routes such as New North Road and other corridors are getting worse.
The programme aims to improve these corridors to better move more people via public transport, improved walking and cycling connections and to make these journeys safer for all, supporting thriving town centres and communities and lowering CO2 emissions.
About Urban Active Links
As part of the Connected Communities Programme, Urban Active Links investigates and plans local cycleway connections that link to these main corridors and identifies how these can be developed. Urban Active Links aims to ensure easier, faster and safer cycling and pedestrian access.
The Urban Active Links Project currently consists of 8 priority routes which will enhance micromobility connections – 6 connecting to New North Road corridor and a further 2 in Midtown.
These connections have previously been consulted on under the previous Auckland Urban Cycle Network programme, Future Connect and Local Board Greenways Plans for both Albert-Eden and Waitematā. This work has fed into the design of the 8 routes, with further engagement and consultation planned on the designs in 2023.
Six routes connecting to New North Road
The New North Road Upgrade project is the first project for the Connected Communities Programme. There are 6 routes within the Urban Active Links that connect into New North Road. The 6 routes are located on Alex Evans Street, Bond Street, Sainsbury Road, Saint Lukes Road, Richardson Road and Owairaka Avenue – as shown below.

Two Midtown routes
Pitt Street to Aotea Centre
The seventh route is planned to connect from Pitt Street down to the centre of town near Aotea Centre. The exact route is currently being considered as part of the wider upgrade works occurring around Karangahape Road and midtown with the new City Rail Link being constructed.
Victoria Street West
The eighth route is located on Victoria Street West. This route connects with the Auckland Council Midtown Regeneration Programme. Similar to the revitalisation of downtown, Wynyard Quarter, and Karangahape Road, Auckland Council is regenerating midtown with new public spaces and improved infrastructure, ready to welcome the thousands of people that will flow in and out of the area daily when Te Waihorotiu Station (Aotea) opens.

Timing
The Auckland Transport team are currently working through the initial design of the 8 routes for Urban Active Links.
We expect to be able to engage on the design in late 2023.
