Proposal outcome

In August 2023, we proposed changes to improve road safety at Aranui Road, Mt Wellington. After reviewing all the feedback we received, we are proceeding with the work as proposed. These works will help support Tāmaki Makaurau’s Vision Zero goal. 

This proposal is supported with funding from Waka Kotahi and the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax.

What happens next

We anticipate the changes will be constructed in 2024/25 financial year subject to funding allocation. We will be in touch with local residents and businesses prior to any construction taking place.

Extend broken yellow lines

  • Suggest additional No Stopping at All Times (NSAAT) marking be painted on one side of the road between the bend and Whitford Avenue also around the corner in front of 67 to in front of 65 to help improve visibility.

NSAAT markings in front of #67 has been included as part of the proposed improvements for this project.

While parked vehicles may reduce the traffic flow to a single lane, these same parked vehicles can discourage drivers from speeding as cars parked on either side of the road give drivers the impression of a narrow road, encouraging greater care when driving. As a result, we believe that on street parking serves as an effective tool for maintaining acceptable speeds in the street. Therefore, we will not be providing additional NSAAT markings from the bend to Whitford Ave.

 Loss of parking

  • Concerned with the removal of 9 car parks especially during peak times and new dwellings. Many cars park with two left wheels on the footpath to prevent motorists sideswiping them. They wouldn't need to if the road was widened, more so the East of Ruawai Road because traffic always crosses the centre line.

We have received community requests concerning the speeding and visibility issues around the bend. The proposed broken yellow lines and speed bumps will greatly reduce head on crashes as well as help improve driveway visibility for #67 Aranui Road. We understand on-street parking spaces are important, so we have minimised the removal of parking as much as possible while still improving safety on Aranui Road to help keep our community safe.

In response to requests received by the community regarding speed and sideswiping of vehicles we are proposing to do some minor improvements on Aranui Road, Mt Wellington.

We are proposing to build two raised safety platforms to slow down vehicles around the bend:

We are proposing to: 

  • Installing two safety platforms which are flat and wide speed bumps raised to the height of the footpath, outside 61 and 71 Aranui Road. The speed bump is flat and wide with a long off ramp. This makes it more comfortable for larger vehicles and their passengers.
  • Paint broken yellow lines (NSAAT) on the bend of Aranui Road to improve visibility. This will remove 9 parking spaces.

This project supports Tāmaki Makaurau’s commitment to Vision Zero, an ambitious transport safety vision, with the goal of no deaths or serious injuries on our transport system by 2050. This approach acknowledges that as people we all make mistakes, however a mistake should not mean someone dies or is seriously injured on our roads. It’s also an approach that values everyone using the road, not just those in vehicles.

Auckland Transport cares for your safety. We want to make our roads safe for everyone, people walking and cycling, especially for our kids and senior citizens and people driving. Projects like this one around Aranui Road are another step towards our goal of achieving no deaths or serious injuries on our roads. We are guided by the Vision Zero approach to transport safety, which prioritises human safety over other measures (like minor time saving).
