Cycling programme overview

Investing in cycling and micromobility benefits individuals and the community in multiple ways:

• improved safety
• emissions reduction
• healthier people
• independent travel for children
• improved access to public transport and social opportunities

The lack of safe, connected cycling facilities is the biggest barrier for people choosing to cycle in Tāmaki Makaurau/Auckland. We will use CATTR funding to invest in new cycle infrastructure and initiatives, focusing on addressing gaps in the existing cycle network.

The CATTR cycling programme will deliver approximately 18km of new separated cycleways in Hobsonville, Manurewa, Albany, Onehunga and the North Shore plus a local area network in New Lynn.

Safe cycle routes will connect residential areas to schools, town centres and public transport. These improvements will be supported by initiatives that encourage people to cycle, such as new bike hubs that offer bike parking and skills training.

Current projects

Current cycle projects in Hobsonville, New Lynn and Manurewa will connect residential areas to local schools, shops and public transport. All include supporting activities to encourage people to get on their bikes.

• Hobsonville Road Cycle Connection – approximately 5km of safe cycling along Hobsonville Road, between Westgate and Hobsonville Point
• Kelston – New Lynn Cycling Improvements – a local network of safe cycle facilities and improvements in New Lynn and Kelston, connecting to the New Lynn Metropolitan Centre
• Manurewa Cycle Connection – approximately 5km of safe cycling along Roscommon Road (south of Browns Road) and Mahia Road

Future projects

Future projects in Onehunga, Takapuna and along the East Coast Road will begin investigation in 2025/2026, with a project in Albany beginning investigation later this year (2024).

These projects will also connect residential areas to local schools, shops and public transport and include supporting activities to encourage people to get on their bikes.

• Albany Highway Cycle Connection – approximately 2km of safe walking and cycling along Albany Highway, between SH18 and Glenfield Road
• Onehunga Cycle Connection – approximately 2km of safe cycling between Onehunga town centre and Cornwall Park, connecting to Onehunga Train Station
• East Coast Road Cycle Connection – approximately 3km of safe cycling along East Coast Road
• Takapuna Cycle Connection – approximately 1km of safe cycling in Takapuna town centre
